We don’t want you to share right now. Actually, we would rather that you keep a straight face, so no one can tell one way or the other. We also do not want any raising of hands. But, there may be someone here who didn’t have a good week this past week. It may have been something serious, or it may have been something not so serious. However, you may have had a week that contained stress; or that had things happen that just made it a challenging week. It could have been things that went on this week that were just annoying. And, you may have ended the week a little down, or in a sour mood.

We have been talking about facing difficult circumstances in life as Christians. However, it became clear this week that these difficult circumstances didn’t have to be huge difficult circumstances. We have seen examples, and the examples we looked at from the bible were of people facing situations that we would hope that we would never go through, and probably won’t go through. Being beaten and thrown into jail after having done nothing wrong. Losing everything – family, wealth, and health. Or, being driven out of your home because you are being pursued by your son who wants to kill you.

But, this past week made it clear to me that the difficult situations don’t have to be so serious. We can face difficulties each week, where we can trust God; they may be small, or they can be quite significant. However, the things we have been learning about can apply to both small and large difficulties. The passages of scripture that we have seen, and the promises we have learned about from God, can be utilized even when we are faced with situations or circumstances that we may be considered minor or even normal in life. But, even normal or minor difficulties in life can cause stress. And, even in normal or minor difficulties we can turn to God for help, support, and guidance.

But, I want to warn you about something, which also became clear to me this past week. We know that God is with us, and will not forsake us. However, I was reminded this past week that this is not necessarily the case about people. There are people in this world (hopefully no one in our group) that are judgmental. Hopefully this has not happened to you, but you need to be aware of it in case it happens to you in the future. There may be times when you go through a difficult situation and someone wants to point out to you that maybe it is due to a problem in your life.

When this happens it almost sounds like the person is saying to you that it is your fault that the difficult circumstance is happening to you. We saw this exact thing when we looked at Job. His friends basically told him that there must be some great sin in his life for all of these bad things to happen to him. They came to the conclusion that God must be mad at him, that God must be punishing him. We have talked about divine discipline before, and it is a real thing, and it is a biblical thing. However, it was not up to Job’s friends to make the evaluation. Divine discipline is a private matter between us and God. Job knew if there was some big sin in his life or not, he didn’t need his friends to judge him. God judges us. God has all of the facts. We are responsible before God for our lives. We know if our spiritual lives are in order or not.

We may have already taken care of our sin through the technique we learned about in 1 John 1:9 We may have already been forgiven by God, and be back in fellowship with God. We surely don’t need someone coming along and telling us (or other people) that we are going through this difficult situation because of our sin or because of how we live our lives. We need to live our own lives as unto the Lord, and we need to evaluate our own lives in light of the truth we learn in God’s word. We aren’t learning biblical truth to straighten out other people, or to judge other people.

It may feel like we are getting a little off topic, [and believe me I don’t want to start preaching]. However, we do need to be aware of this situation as we face difficult circumstances. So, if it happens to us, or it has happened to us in the past, what do we do about it? Do we get upset? Probably, because it is quite annoying when someone judges us. But the reality is that we shouldn’t get upset. Why? Because, we don’t want to judge the judgmental person. We don’t want to lower ourselves to their level. Let’s pause a second to let that sink in. We don’t want to be judgmental of the judgmental person.

This is a difficult situation. And, this is a good time to utilize what we have been learning. An example will help. Let’s say your car breaks down. This is obviously a difficult circumstance. Then, let’s say someone comes along and says something like, “I knew you weren’t living your life properly as a Christian, now see what happens.” The difficult situation of your car breaking down just became more difficult. If you are anything like me the heat starts rising right after you hear this person’s evaluation of the situation, and my blood starts boiling. It would be hard for me to hold my tongue.

Let’s think to ourselves what we should do. This may be a little too close to home for us to think clearly about it, but let’s try. What do we do before we start swearing; before we get angry; before we begin shouting something to the effect of, “My life, well what about your life?”

We need to remember who the ultimate judge is, and who has all of the facts. This is difficult for all of us, so don’t feel bad or beat yourself up. We are all here to learn. When we face situations like this it is not easy to remember a simple promise like, “Cast all your cares on Me, because I care for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) It is not easy to say a quick prayer, something like, “Father, I really don’t know how to handle this situation, I don’t want to get mad, I don’t want to be judgmental, I know you are with me, please just let me trust you, and help me to leave this situation in your hands. I know that you can handle it, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

The car still has to be fixed. We still need to figure out how we are going to get to work, and call our boss to explain the situation. And we still may have to give an answer to the person in front of us, who is judging us. But, can you see that if we pause like this, all of sudden we are calmer. All of a sudden we have a confidence that we may be able to get through this situation. We have our eyes on God, not only on the difficult situation. Will the situation get resolved? Yes. Will it get resolved on it’s own? No. We can have faith while we are calling mechanics and getting estimates. We can have faith that we will make the right decision, and pick a good mechanic, and we won’t get ripped off. Maybe another promise from God is in order. Maybe a quick prayer for guidance is in order. But, the desire is that through the whole process we are more relaxed, and that we experience less stress. We don't turn to God, and then miraculously everything is taken care of. God isn’t our genie that gives us whatever we wish for. We don’t need to see signs and wonders all the time. He IS our God, and He wants a relationship with us, and He wants to take care of us. He wants to be a part of our lives.

The situation is still the same. The car is still broken down and someone was judgmental of us. The point is, that we don’t have to go through it alone. However, we do have to go through it. Many people think that we shouldn’t have any problems as Christians; that our lives should be perfect, and that our car should never break down, and that people shouldn’t be mean to us. That God should wave His magic wand and everything should be taken care of. It doesn’t work that way, and if other people give you the impression that it should be, then they are wrong.

This is exactly why we have spending the time that we have in God’s word. To learn the reality of who God is and how He operates. We know He is all-powerful. We know that He could fix the car instantaneously and he could render the mean person to dust instantly. But, why would He do that? That might be our prayer from the past, but as we have learned we know that that isn’t how He operates, even though He could. How would we grow then? How would our faith be strengthened? How would we learn to walk with Him? We don’t need for everything to be easy, but it sure is a lot easier when God is with us. It is sure a lot easier when we remember the assurance that He loves us. It sure is a lot easier when we remember how His grace works, and how it has worked for us in the past. It is sure a lot easier when we remember what our attitude should be, even in difficult circumstances. It will be easier when we remember what David wrote to us in Psalm 23:2:

“2He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.”

Last week we learned that the green meadows refer to God’s word. We can rest in God’s word. The second part of verse 2 talks about God’s guidance. In the Hebrew this literally means “waters of refreshment”. So, this is stating that God will lead us to place of refreshment. Doesn’t seem possible does it? In a time of disaster, that He will lead us to a place where we can be refreshed? If you have ever experienced it, like King David had in the past, just the reminder of it would cause you to praise God, like David is doing here.

We are not sheep. We are not helpless like sheep … or are we? This past week, I don’t want to admit it, but I was totally and completely a sheep. I was helpless. But, as I thought about the week, I was not hopeless. No, my car didn’t break down, No, someone didn’t judge me, no I didn’t have to call my boss, but it felt as if I did.

我們不是羊 我們不像羊一樣無助，還是我們是呢？ 過去一周，我不想承認，但我完全是一隻羊。 我很無奈， 但是，當我想到這一周，我不是沒有盼望。 不，我的車沒有壞，沒有人論斷我，不，我不需要打電話給我的老闆，但感覺好像我必需要一樣。

We will look at what is on the board one more time because I need to remember it.

1.    Learn God’s word.
2.    Believe God’s word.
3.    Remember God’s word – especially His promises.
4.    Apply the promise to the difficult circumstance.
5.    Come to a conclusion that allows you to face the difficulty, with faith and trust in God.
6.     Rest & Refreshment through the difficulty.

The key item comes in the beginning. We don’t even get to the first step unless we are interested. We must first have a thirst, a hunger, a desire to learn about God, before we take the time and effort to learn His word.

Another very important item is number 2 – that we believe God’s word. If we learn what is in God’s word, but we reject it or don’t believe it, there is no hope, and none of what we have been talking about works in our life. There is no possibility for the rest that comes from the guidance from God’s word. We can’t claim a promise, we can’t mix His promises with faith, we can’t come to a point of refreshment that comes from having no fear. We can’t get to a point of tranquility in a difficult circumstance. We go through the circumstance alone.

However, if we do believe God’s word, we only have the potential for this rest and refreshment. We can still fail to claim the promises of God, even if we believed the promise when we first learned it. We still must remember it and mix it with faith at the time of the difficult circumstance. Then and only then can we apply it to the circumstance. Then and only then can it help us come to the conclusion that God is with us through the situation, and will take care of us. And, only then can we be lead to the peace that surpasses all understanding. The car still needs to be fixed, but what a great feeling it is knowing Romans 8:28:

It will renovate our thinking. Okay, we get it now. Now, all we need to do is go and practice it. Fortunately, we will have plenty of opportunity to do so. God has promised us this as well.

Next week we will finally get to verse 3 of Psalm 23. It will continue to provide us with encouragement. It states that “God restores our soul.” We will learn what this means and how it relates to us receiving forgiveness from God due to the work of Christ on the cross; even when we fail. God judges, but God also provides for us to receive forgiveness of all of our sins – both at salvation and later as Christians.
