People are often confused between trials and temptations, but the two are different.  Trials are to test our faith in God. We will grow and be more mature spiritually after we pass the trials. Trials cultivate our character to be more like our Lord.  Temptations do not come from God. God does not tempt man. The temptation is drawn by man's own desires. Temptation is a trick used by Satan, the evil one, to get us to sin. There is no other way but to rely on the Lord for us to pass trials and resist the temptation.  Let us choose to be more committed to establishing a relationship with God, and get closer to the Lord every day. Let us draw strength from God to overcome all trials and temptations.

“I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘These are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’””Zechariah 13:9 NLT

““But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.” Job 23:10 NLT

“And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.”

James 1:13-14 NLT

“For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” 1 John 2:16-17 NLT

“and as your days, so shall your strength be.”Deuteronomy 33:25b ESV

I would like to talk about a serious and critical topic that may be unpopular to some people. It is about "death."   It can not be elaborated only in few words, but here is just a brief description.

John 3:16 says: ““For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

This means that God promises everyone who believes and accepts the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ to have eternal life.  Eternal life means to reconcile and restore the relationship with God in spirit. Although there is physical death, but there is eternal life of the spirit. Therefore, we say that believers are born twice and die once. Born once from the womb of our mother and then born again from the spirit,  The physical body will die, but the spirit with resurrection body is with God in eternity forever. Unbelievers live once but die twice, that is, the death of the physical body and the eternal death of the spirit. A question worth pondering about death.

“Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power,  ” Revelation 20:6a NLT

“I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.”

Revelation 20:12-15 NLT

““Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.” Revelation 2:11 NLT

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation,” 1 Peter 1:3 NLT

How blessed are those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ!  Our identity in the Lord Jesus Christ is accepted because we are of God, children of God, friends of Jesus, and body of Christ, and we are redeemed.  We are safe because we are citizens of the kingdom of heaven. God has given us power of love and courageous heart. God is with us, and makes everything work good together for us; and we are important because we are the temple of God and the witnesses of Christ.  We are the royal priests. We are the light and salt of the world.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”John 1:12 ESV

“You are my friends if you do what I command you.” John 15:14 ESV

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV

“for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

2 Timothy 1:7 ESV

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”Hebrews 4:16 ESV

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””Acts 1:8 ESV

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9 ESV

““You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16 ESV

The older I am, the more I understand that one must be cautious about whom one hangs out with.  As Confucius said, "listen to what one says and observe what one does.” This means to judge a person not by his words only but also by his actions; so that you will know them better.  Proverbs, the book of wisdom in the Bible, tells us a lot about fools, and how one will suffer loss when they are friends with them. Some are very pictorial and vivid. Here are a few verses:

“Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.” Proverbs 13:20 NLT

“Stay away from fools, for you won’t find knowledge on their lips.”Proverbs 14:7 NLT

“Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.” Proverbs 10:18 NLT

“You cannot separate fools from their foolishness, even though you grind them like grain with mortar and pestle.” Proverbs 27:22 NLT

“Better to be criticized by a wise person than to be praised by a fool. A fool’s laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless.” Ecclesiastes 7:5-6 NLT

“It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fools; this also is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 7:5-6 ESV

“Better to hear the quiet words of a wise person than the shouts of a foolish king.” Ecclesiastes 9:17 NLT

“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 1:7 NLT

“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.” Proverbs 28:26 ESV

In the Bible, in Hebrews 9:27, it says: "And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,” This is the same for everyone, and sooner or later we will all face it. If this is the case, and it is, we should ask ourselves whether we live out the purpose for which our Creator has created us. And, whether our ways of life can be blameless before the judgment seat of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we should be introspective about what is built on the foundation of the corner stone of the Lord.  Is it gold, silver and gemstones that can withstand the fire, or is it grass, wood and straw that turns to ashes when the fire burns?

“Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.” 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 NLT

“Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23 NLT

We love people because God loved us first. And even more, we love God because He loved us first. God’s love for the world is completed and perfected in the salvation of Jesus Christ. It is not because we love God that we can make God love us more.  We love God to know Him better, and to have a more intimate relationship with Him.  It is to make our spiritual life more mature, and to understand God’s plan and will for our lives. Therefore we can live out the original intention He created us for.

“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:7-10 NLT

“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.” 1 John 4:16-17NLT

We have all heard people say that money is evil. People also might say that if someone has money that they are evil. Both statements are false. The bible makes it clear what the issue with money is - 1Timothy 6:10 says,
“For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
The issue isn’t money itself, it is the love of moneygreediness about money) that causes issues. We don’t want to wander away from the faith, and the love of money has the power to do just that. We are to love God, first, and no other love should take that place. We are to worship God first, and not worship anyone or anything above that worship. We need money, we have a responsibility to support our families, but we also have the responsibility for it not to take over the number one position in our lives.
“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21 NLT
“In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.” Proverbs 23:5 NLT
“O my son, give me your heart. May your eyes take delight in following my ways.” Proverbs 23:26 NLT

Someone once told me that moral things such as courtesy, justice, integrity, and shame were of no use at all. He would only use it as a shield to protect himself when he needed it.  Therefore, he can do whatever he wants and choose his own way.  This is the popular view in this era of, "As long as I like it, what can't I  do?”  To these people, truth is only relative. It is used as a tool for self-interest. When they don't need it, they leave it aside. Life is still going in their own wicked ways. They have no sense of guilt toward those whom are fooled and used by them.  Let us not to be foolish like such people.

“Fools make fun of guilt, but the godly acknowledge it and seek reconciliation.” Proverbs 14:9 NLT

“Doing wrong is fun for a fool, but living wisely brings pleasure to the sensible.”

Proverbs 10:23 NLT

“This is the way of an adulteress: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no wrong.”” Proverbs 30:20 ESV

How do we react to suffering when natural or man-made disasters strike?  We talked yesterday about Jacob who is one of the examples of “attitude determines altitude” in the Bible.  Let us briefly describe the story of Joseph; he went from being  a father’s favorite child to being framed by his half-brothers and becoming a slave in a foreign land. He then became the manager of his master’s household, but was sent to jail due to the false accusation of his master’s wife because he resisted her seduction.  However, through it all he trusts in the Lord, and believes that everything is God’s will.  He did not get discouraged. Instead, he became a blessing to others, because God was with him.  He eventually became Egypt’s prime minister and was second in command over the entire country. Not only did he save his family but he also saved many people.  I pray that we all learn to trust God, rely on God, and obey God like Jacob and Joseph. When suffering comes, let us regard it as an opportunity for us to get closer to God, and also an opportunity to honor God and benefit others.

“The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.”Genesis 39:2-3 ESV

“From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field.” Genesis 39:5 ESV

“But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. Genesis 50:19-20 ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28 ESV

How do we react to suffering when natural or man-made disasters strike us?  Let’s take a look at two examples in the Bible: Job and Joseph. They are good examples of, “attitude determines altitude.”  When Job lost everything, even when he lost his children, he was sad; however he did not complain about others, nor blame God. He believed that there must be a reason for God to allow all these things to happen to him. He just obeyed, still praised God, and believed in God's absolute sovereignty.  He didn’t charge God with any wrong.  When he passed the test, he knew God better, and God blessed him even more than before.  Tomorrow we will continue, and look at Joseph's story.

“And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.”Job 1:21-22 ESV

“In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” Job 2:10b ESV

“And the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning. ”Job 42:12 ESV

“We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.” James 5:11 NLT
