How do we react to suffering when natural or man-made disasters strike? We talked yesterday about Jacob who is one of the examples of “attitude determines altitude” in the Bible. Let us briefly describe the story of Joseph; he went from being a father’s favorite child to being framed by his half-brothers and becoming a slave in a foreign land. He then became the manager of his master’s household, but was sent to jail due to the false accusation of his master’s wife because he resisted her seduction. However, through it all he trusts in the Lord, and believes that everything is God’s will. He did not get discouraged. Instead, he became a blessing to others, because God was with him. He eventually became Egypt’s prime minister and was second in command over the entire country. Not only did he save his family but he also saved many people. I pray that we all learn to trust God, rely on God, and obey God like Jacob and Joseph. When suffering comes, let us regard it as an opportunity for us to get closer to God, and also an opportunity to honor God and benefit others.
“The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.”Genesis 39:2-3 ESV
“From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field.” Genesis 39:5 ESV
“But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. Genesis 50:19-20 ESV
「And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.」Romans 8:28 ESV
