Someone asked about whether it’s mandatory to be baptized first then one may receive holy communion. Here is a brief explanation. Please contact us privately for details.

The Bible says that "Anyone believes and is baptized will be saved." It does not say that only believing and be baptized so you can receive the Holy communion . Believe and be baptized will be saved. "Believe/Faith " is a sufficient and necessary condition for salvation, but baptism is a non-essential condition for salvation. For example, when it rains, the rain falls on the ground, so the ground gets wet. But when the ground is wet, it does not necessarily mean it's raining. The best example of being saved by faith, but not being baptized in the Bible is one of the two criminals who were crucified with Jesus. Because believing in the Lord Jesus Christ is the one who he claimed , “Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."" Luke 23:43 NIV

He was saved by believing, without baptism. It’s not allowed in their circumstances. If people got baptized but do not have the reality of faith , this baptism is just an empty ritual . For example, in order to achieve the purpose of applying for political asylum to immigrate to the United States, some people go to church to get baptized, and they disappear once they receive their certificate of baptism. Their purpose is that piece of document. There is no reality of belief. This is just an example but not perfect, because there might be exceptional factors.

The cup and bread of the Holy Communion do not have the effect of atonement, because the real work of atonement is accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. The Communion ceremony is just an external form of commemorating the atonement of the Lord Jesus' death for us through the cup and bread. Like water baptism, it does not have the effect of cleansing sins, but an external form of forgiveness of internal sins. But it is only meaningful to have the reality of faith when one partakes these two rituals.

In particular, one must be cautious when one partakes the holy communion. One must examine one’s own sins. Many churches stipulate that after you have decided to believe in the Lord, you must also be baptized publicly before you can receive the holy communion , but the Bible does not stipulate this. Baptism can also involve only two people. For example, the Bible records that Philip met an eunuch on the road and explained the scriptures for him. The eunuch believed on the spot and was baptized. Only the two of them went to the river and Philip baptized him. There was no special public announcement at the moment of his baptism.

“As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.” Matthew 26:26-28 NLT

“For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again. So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 NLT

“I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.” Hosea 6:6 NLT
