I was very moved by the movie "Amish Grace," which is based on real events. It is about being thoughtful and choosing to forgive, even under devastating pain. These are not easy decisions, yet to see it in action was very touching. This reminds me of what the Lord Jesus said on the cross. He said: "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34) The Lord Jesus was nailed to the cross. Not only was he physically tortured, but also people blatantly hated him; they despised him, scolded him, and his disciples also scattered. But even though the Lord Jesus despised his suffering, he looked into people’s hearts; he pitied their ignorance, and prayed for forgiveness for them. This reminds us that when we get hurt by people, that we must also have compassion on the people who caused us to suffer, forgive them, and pray for God’s forgiveness for them. When we do this we can experience great peace in our hearts, and there is no longer any negative emotion. This movie shows the Biblical teaching that forgiveness is what the Lord commanded us to do, and judgment belongs to God, and to God alone.
“And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Mark 11:25 ESV
“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;” Luke 6:37 ESV
“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 ESV
11 Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs. Proverbs 19:11 NLT
